Year 5/6 News

In Literacy last week, we built our reading fluency by working with a partner and reading aloud together. During these sessions, students take turns reading while their partner listens, encourages, and provides support when needed. Reading aloud helps students develop confidence, improve expression, and read more smoothly and accurately. It also gives them the opportunity to practise using punctuation, pace, and intonation to bring a text to life. We have been so impressed with the teamwork, enthusiasm, and growing confidence our students are showing as they strengthen their fluency skills.

In Mathematics, we began our new unit on fractions with a fun and engaging game called First to 3. Students rolled a die to determine how many sixths they could add to their total, carefully converting equivalent fractions along the way. For example, students recognised that 3/6 is equivalent to 1/2 and combined fractions to make whole numbers. The aim of the game was to be the first to make three whole numbers, encouraging students to practise identifying equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and building confidence with fraction concepts in an enjoyable and collaborative way.

As part of our Confirmation preparation, our Year 5/6 students and their parents and guardians gathered for a special Faith Night. Together, we explored the meaning of the Sacrament of Confirmation, reflected on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and learned about the saints that students have chosen as their Confirmation patrons. It was a meaningful evening of faith, learning, and conversation, providing families with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the sacrament and support one another on this important step in their faith journey. We are grateful to all the families who attended and contributed to such a thoughtful and prayerful evening.

Congratulations to our Year 6 students who celebrated their Confirmation over the weekend. This is a significant milestone in their faith journey, and we are incredibly proud of the commitment, reverence, and preparation they have shown. We hope it was a joyful and memorable occasion for the students and their families, and we wish them God's continued blessings as they continue to grow in faith.
