Cooking Family Workshops

Did somebody say Fiesta?
Our Family Kitchen Workshops, held on 2 and 4 June, transformed the Food Technology rooms into vibrant hubs of flavour, laughter and connection. Families came together to cook up a storm, learning how to create a delicious and affordable Mexican-inspired meal from scratch.
The menu featured homemade salsa bursting with fresh ingredients, custom fajita spice blends with chilli levels tailored to individual preferences, and quick and easy wraps that were rolled, filled and devoured in only a few bites! The aroma of fresh herbs, spices and sizzling ingredients filled the rooms, creating an atmosphere that was both welcoming and exciting.
As always, a little friendly competition emerged throughout the evening. Whether it was debating the perfect spice blend or competing to roll the flattest wrap, families embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and plenty of good humour. The buzz of conversation between students, parents and carers was constant, highlighting the true purpose of the evening: bringing people together through food.
A special thank you to Ormia for generously sponsoring the event and contributing towards the cost of ingredients. Their support allowed families to participate free of charge and ensured that everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the experience.
Alongside developing practical cooking skills, families explored the financial and nutritional benefits of preparing meals at home. Participants discovered that each bench produced enough food to feed approximately three people at a cost of just $15.89, compared to purchasing a single wrap from a fast food outlet for around $14. These discussions highlighted not only the value of home cooking but also the importance of making informed food choices.
Most importantly, the workshops celebrated something that cannot be measured in dollars: the joy of cooking together. From chopping and mixing to sharing a meal around the table, the evening provided an opportunity for families to slow down, connect and create lasting memories.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for these fantastic evenings. The Food Technology team loved sharing their passion for cooking with our school community and look forward to welcoming families back into the kitchen in August for…. PUB CLASSICS NIGHT! Hello Chicken Parma’s and Apple Crumbles.
