Year 12 Environmental Science Camp – Whitsundays Adventure

From 8th to the 12th June, our Year 12 Environmental Science students embarked on an unforgettable field study camp to the spectacular Whitsundays, where they had the opportunity to experience first-hand many of the ecosystems and environmental concepts they have been studying in class.

Our adventure began with a crocodile safari along the Proserpine River, where students explored the vital role that mangroves and wetlands play in supporting biodiversity, protecting coastlines and providing important ecosystem services. Along the way, students were fortunate enough to spot crocodiles in their natural habitat while learning about the unique environmental challenges facing these ecosystems.

A highlight of the week was our visit to Daydream Island, where students worked alongside marine biologists to investigate the island's innovative coral regeneration project. Students participated in the Living Reef program, learnt about coral conservation efforts and even took part in ray feeding, gaining valuable insights into marine ecosystem management and restoration.

The absolute highlight of the camp was our Ocean Rafting excursion to the Great Barrier Reef. Students conducted an underwater reef survey, collecting data on indicator species for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. This authentic scientific experience allowed students to contribute to real-world environmental monitoring while also enjoying the incredible beauty and biodiversity of one of the world's most iconic ecosystems.

While the camp provided many exciting learning opportunities, there was also time for students to complete their homework for other subjects. Of course, no trip to the Whitsundays would be complete without some fun, and students made the most of their free time by tackling the Big 4 Whitsunday resort's famous waterslides and enjoying the tropical surroundings.

The camp was an outstanding success, providing students with valuable fieldwork experience, unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the importance of protecting Australia's unique environments. We would like to congratulate all students on the way they represented the school throughout the trip and thank them for their enthusiasm, curiosity and positive attitude.
