Level 1

It has been another fantastic fortnight in Level 1! Students have enjoyed learning about animals and their habitats in our Literacy and Inquiry lessons, have used hands-on materials to explore grouping and sharing in Maths, but they especially loved seeing so many amazing animals in real life on our Melbourne Zoo Excursion!

Literacy

Our budding authors have loved becoming animal experts over the past fortnight. Students have been researching different animals using books, fact files and digital resources before writing informative paragraphs about their appearance and diet. It has been wonderful to watch students become more confident at finding important information, organising their ideas and choosing stronger, more interesting words to make their writing even better. We have been so impressed with the effort and pride students are taking in their work.

Numeracy

Maths this fortnight, has been full of hands-on problem solving! Students explored equal grouping and sharing through fun zoo-themed investigations, using counters, cubes and drawings to find different ways to organise the same number. We loved hearing students explain and justify their thinking, and it has been fantastic to see so many students confidently trying different strategies and persevering when problems became tricky.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have continued exploring maps and animal habitats. They created bird's-eye-view maps of our classroom using symbols and keys before bringing their ideas to life by designing animal habitats in Makers Empire. The creativity, teamwork and thoughtful problem-solving on display has been incredible, and we can't wait to see how these habitat designs continue to develop over the coming weeks!

Zoo Excursion

On Tuesday 4th August, our Level 1 students had an amazing day at Melbourne Zoo! We were very lucky with the weather - apart from one short downpour, the rain stayed away and we were able to enjoy a fantastic day exploring the zoo. The students absolutely loved spotting all the incredible animals and had so much fun climbing over the hills and rocks as they made their way around the different habitats.

During the 'Habitats and Features' Educational Workshop, students learnt how animals' unique features help them survive in their habitats and made lots of connections to what we've been learning in Inquiry. It was wonderful to see their excitement, curiosity and thoughtful questions throughout the day.
