Level 5

Welcome back!

As the winter chill dissipates, our school community is buzzing with warmth, energy, and excitement. Term 3 is always a busy and rewarding time of year, filled with new learning opportunities, swimming, and moments that showcase the growth, resilience, and kindness of our Level 5 students.

Reading

Students have continued to study  A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park. Based on a true story, the novel follows a dual narrative, alternating between two characters living in different time periods in Sudan. Through this, students have compared and contrasted their experiences.

Students are engaging deeply with the text, analysing how the author uses dual perspectives, figurative language, and imagery to convey meaning and emotion. They are also exploring vocabulary choices and discussing the impact these have on the reader.

We have recently introduced Fluency Pairs into our reading program. Students have been  working with a partner to read aloud, helping to build confidence, accuracy, and expression.

Writing

Teachers have been modelling 'think alouds' to show students their own idea generation, planning, writing process, struggles, mistakes, word choice, editing and revising sequence.

This term, we are focusing on the narrative genre. Students are generating ideas and learning how to refine them by focusing on one key concept in detail. They have been drafting their narratives, using transitional language and revising their work to develop richer complications and include descriptive detail. Figurative language has been a major focus with students spending more time crafting sentences to paint a picture rather than just stating what is happening. Here are some examples.

Numeracy

Students have been learning about multiplying, dividing and simplifying fractions. Multiplying fractions has been a simpler concept for students who have a strong understanding of timestables and multiplication relationships. Remembering the 'Keep, change, flip' strategy when dividing fractions has really helped students gain confidence when tackling equations. Next week we will learn about ratios and their connection to real life situations.

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, we are exploring Geography. Our guiding question is: “How are we connected to the world around us?”

Students have been participating in the 'Globle' guessing game everyday to strengthen their understanding of continents, countries and the distance between them.

Students have been exploring their connection to South East Asia and other countires, characteristics of different continents and different lifestyles of people around the world. We have been working to integrate Inquiry throughout Literacy and some elements of Maths.

A HUGE congratulations to our amazing netballers who have progressed to the next stage of the state high ability competition. We are so proud of you!!!!
