Year 7 Food Studies

The age old adage “An apple a day keeps the doctor away…” is a lot more attainable when the apple is stewed with sugar and cinnamon and topped with a sweet, crunchy crumble!

This week, our budding Year 7 chefs filled the school with the amazing aroma of hot apple crumble. As part of their practical learning, students explored the foundations of cooking by preparing this classic recipe that builds confidence and independence in the kitchen.

Students demonstrated their understanding of safe cutting techniques and stewing as well as how to develop texture with butter, sugar and dry ingredients.

Each student did a fantastic job and, of course, was rewarded with a delicious treat at the end of the lesson. Sadly, no ice-cream or custard was available as a side, however, it is strongly recommended by health professionals.

We encourage families to try this recipe at home.

Students have been encouraged to experiment with flavours and report back on their favourite combinations. Staff personal favourites include: Apple and berry, Apple and apricot and even stewed peaches! We look forward to hearing about even more creative combinations!

Year 8 Taco Design Task

Year 8 students in Food Studies this term and their creations for their Taco design task. With each student having the option to choose from a range of options for each typical ingredient for a taco, they all designed tasty Tacos to suit themselves or their families. (Of course, they designed for themselves!) One student was even brave enough to include hot sauce, chipotle sauce and jalapenos in their spicy selection.

Bakery Café Cake Design Challenge!!

Last week, in the College kitchens, a strong sense of purpose and excitement pervaded the air as over 70 Year 9 & 10 students worked to produce their own cake designs for the ‘Petit Gateau’ Design task for the Bakery Café Food Elective.

It was of great satisfaction to teachers to observe students working independently in the kitchen as they all applied the cooking skills and creative ideas they've developed this Semester.

Students had the option to select a client of their choice for the Design task (ie: a family member, a teacher, a counsellor or a friend) and then gift box their decorated Cake and give this to them as a token of gratitude.

We encourage you all to look at the film pictures below of their Cake Creations which celebrate the Success of all Students on the Day. Keep on Baking and having Fun all Students!!! And….. …Well Done and Congratulations to All!
