AFL Umpiring Academy - WFNL

Over many years the Western Football Netball League has had a proud history of providing many umpires to AFL ranks. A number of years ago in conjunction with the AFL we set up three academies in the western region to cater for students (female and male) in the area to be able to pursue their football ambitions without interfering with their school aims, or conflicting with other commitments. In this time, with the cooperation of the schools and teachers we have been the leaders throughout Australia in providing to students -

  • A safe environment to pursue their umpiring skills
  • A system that has encouraged them to continue playing football whilst also looking at another aspect of football
  • The opportunity to develop the following skills:
  • Management
  • Control/Confidence
  • Decision Making
  • Leadership
  • Communication
  • Ability to earn pocket money in pursuing something they both like and keeps them fit and active
  • A space that allows brothers/ sisters/ parents/ friends to join together in participating in a sport that caters for all ages and gender

The three academies have been established at-

  • MacKillop College, Werribee
  • Saltwater Reserve, Point Cook
  • Hogans Road Reserve, Hoppers Crossing.

These Academies operate on Monday nights between 4.00-5.00 pm.

In 2026 they will commence on Monday 2nd March.

We also have an academy at our Umpires HQ - Hanmer Reserve, Yarraville on a Thursday night between 5.00 – 6.00 pm commencing Wednesday 5th March ( for two weeks then reverting to Thursday’s).

We ask you to distribute the attached to your students in the hope a number will take up this worthwhile venture.
