Grade 6 News

Literacy
We are continuing to read Us Mob Wallawuru and learning about the events leading up to the 1967 Referendum and the impacts the referendum had on First Nations Australians. Students are using this learning to create a factual recount of the 1967 Referendum.
Maths
We are beginning a new Maths unit on Fractions.
During this unit, students will learn to:
- Compare and order fractions using pictures and models
- Place fractions on a number line
- Find and show equivalent fractions (fractions that are the same size)
- Simplify fractions
- Use common “benchmark” fractions such as ½ to help compare
- Compare fractions with the same or different denominators
The focus will be on understanding fractions, not just getting the answer. Students will be encouraged to draw, explain their thinking, and use models.
How you can help at home:
- Talk about fractions in everyday life (sharing food, cooking, measuring).
- Ask your child to explain how they know one fraction is bigger or smaller than another.
