Grade 5 News

What a busy few weeks we have had in Grade 5!
In Maths, we have just completed a unit on fractions. Students learned how to place fractions on a number line, which helped them compare and order a variety of fractions and mixed numerals. We are now beginning our unit on decimals, building a foundation for future learning by developing an understanding of the place value of decimal numbers to thousandths.
In Literacy, we have been reading Dirrarn, the sequel to Black Cockatoo, which follows Mia as she leaves her Country to attend boarding school in the city. We have been exploring how being so far away from Country affects her life. Students have also been learning about the famous Bunuba resistance fighter, Jandamarra, who fought against the colonisers. As part of this learning, students will be creating a factual recount of his life.
Interschool sport began on Friday; however, the Grade 5s had a bye. This week, we will be playing Wangaratta Primary School at St Bernard’s. We are looking forward to our first experiences in the interschool sports competition.
The Fun Run is coming up next Friday. A fantastic amount of money has already been raised for the school, and we hope this continues into next week. Congratulations to 5 Chatwin for winning the prize for the most profiles created last week.
