Grade 6 Community News
Dear families,
It has been wonderful to see how well the students have settled into life as Year 6s. The students are seamlessly transitioning between their two classrooms and have taken on board all of the routines and norms embedded during our Learn-to-Learn program.
English
Grammar: In Grammar, the students have been identifying the subject and predicate of sentences. They have also been identifying prepositional and adverbial phrases.
Vocabulary: The words the students have been introduced to through our text, Kensuke’s Kingdom are: puncture, manky, veer, reluctant, inquisitive, clamber, persuade and cavorted. The students learn the definition of these words and how to use them in their own writing.
Text Reading: We have continued reading our text, Kensuke’s Kingdom. We pause to reflect on the events of the text as well as to discuss literary devices the author uses. In addition, the students have bolstered their understanding of the text through reading and taking notes from non-fiction texts about sailing.
Sentence Level Writing: The students have been working on using fronted adverbial phrases and conjunctions in their sentences. This is to add variety to the structure of their sentences making their writing more engaging for their audience.
Maths
In Maths this week, our Grade 6 students are exploring different types of numbers, including prime, composite, square, and triangular numbers. They are learning how to identify and classify numbers, recognise number patterns, and explain their reasoning using mathematical language. Next week, we will move into operations, where students will apply their understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to solve multi-step problems with increasing confidence and accuracy.
Sport
The students have continued to participate in cricket, basketball, T-ball, tennis, and volley stars on Friday afternoons as preparation for Gala Day continues. If your child has been selected for a Gala Day team; please use Compass to give permission for their participation when this goes live.
