Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 Families,

We have really got stuck in with our routines, expectations and learning in Grade 1!

InitiaLit

In InitiaLit, we have been revising sounds and letters from Prep as well as looking at longer words which use a CCVC, CVCC, CCVCC letter pattern e.g. chop, path, chomp. We have learned six new tricky words in class, and it would be helpful if you could work with your child(ren) at home to practice these – said, are, her, was, you, very.

We have also enjoyed learning some new games in class to help us with our recognition and reading of words. These are games that we will use throughout Grade 1 with a key focus on tricky words and sounds as we progress through our InitiaLit programme.

Maths

In Maths, students have completed a bridging assessment, as well as started to look at how we use bundling sticks to help us make and say 2-digit numbers. We have also started looking at the months of the year and will begin to look at 2D shapes, describing triangles and quadrilaterals based on their properties.

Humanities

Our humanities subject area this term is focussing on History. We have started off by looking at our local area and the things we can see, helping to define if these are natural or man-made structures. We will progress to looking at how areas have changed over time.

Respectful Relationships

We have started off Grade 1 with looking at different emotions we may feel and how to describe what these may look or sound like within the classroom.

Vocabulary

In Week 3 and 4, we introduced new vocabulary to our Grade 1 students while exploring the text ‘Fang Fang’s Chinese New Year’. Students examined target words closely and engaged in various word association activities to deepen their understanding.

Calendar:

School photos will be taking place on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th February.

On March 20th, 2026, Tarneit Rise will celebrate Harmony Day. A special day that recognises the many cultures, backgrounds, and traditions that make our school community so vibrant. Harmony Day teaches students that everyone belongs and deserves to feel safe, valued, and respected. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to dress up in their cultural attire and celebrate what makes each of us unique!

Thanks for your support!
