Year 2 News

Welcome back to a new term! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It’s wonderful to see our students returning with enthusiasm, ready for another exciting term of learning and growth.
As Mathematicians, we have been exploring the concept of ‘renaming numbers’ with both 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. This means understanding that numbers can be represented in different ways while still having the same value. We have been learning to break numbers apart into hundreds, tens and ones, and then recombine them in flexible ways. For example, 34 can be renamed as 3 tens and 4 ones, or as 2 tens and 14 ones. Similarly, 256 can be renamed as 2 hundreds, 5 tens and 6 ones, or as 25 tens and 6 ones.
As Writers, we have been learning how to write letters to a variety of people. We have written thoughtful letters to friends, family members, teachers and Mrs Watson, adapting our ideas depending on their audience. We have explored the structure of a letter, including the date, greeting, body, closing and signature. We are learning how to organise our ideas clearly, ask questions, and include interesting details. This has been a wonderful way to build both writing skills and meaningful connections with others.
As Readers and Inquirers, we have been learning about ANZAC Day through picture story books. We read ‘ANZAC Biscuits’ and completed a variety of tasks to deepen our understanding of the meaning of ANZAC Day. We were also very lucky to have Taylor S visit our class and share about his time in the Army. Students were highly engaged and found his experiences very interesting, helping to bring our learning to life in a meaningful way.
This week, we will be learning about…
- Numeracy: Rounding to the nearest ten and hundred
- Reading: ANZAC stories and comprehension skills
- Writing: Letter writing
- Spelling: The digraph /er/ making the sound "eh" as in over.
- Inquiry: Technology
- Religion: St Fidelis
- TRP: GEM leaders
We look forward to another wonderful term of learning in Year 2! Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
Have a great week!
Year 2 Team,
Sarah Hogan and Nadia Ascenzo
