Bonjour, dear parents and students,

Term 2 is well underway, with assessments just around the corner!

Auditions for the French Day fashion show will be held in Week 3, followed by dance auditions in Week 4. Thank you to all students who have already participated. Our poetry competitors have also been working hard in preparation for the upcoming French Poetry Competition—best of luck to all involved!

Below is a snapshot of what each year level has been focusing on during Weeks 1–2:

Prep

Prep students have been revising the days of the week and extending their knowledge of numbers from 6–10. They are practicing through choral repetition and gradually moving towards written tasks.

Grade 1

Students have been learning about farm animals in French and how to use them in a sentence beginning with “C’est le…” (“This is the…”), practiced both verbally and in writing.

Grade 2

Students have been learning about family members and wild animals in French, focusing on correct pronunciation and using them in simple sentences.

Grade 3

Students have been learning vowel sound combinations (ou, ai, au, on, oi, ui, ain, eau) and their correct pronunciation, along with word examples. They have also explored common French word endings (-ible, -able, -tion, -nion, -ent, -ant, -ence, -ance, -al) and how these connect to similar English words.

Grade 4

Students have been learning how to form negative sentences in French, focusing on the placement of “ne” and “pas”. They have also explored emotions in French and practiced translating short passages using inferencing skills.

Grade 5

Students have been learning letter-sound combinations (eau, eur, ille, ette, in, oi, ai, on, ui, ou) through dialogue practice. They have also been introduced to present tense -RE verbs and how to conjugate them with appropriate subject pronouns.

Grade 6

Students have been consolidating letter-sound combinations (eau, eur, ille, ette, in, oi, ai, on, ui, ou) through dialogue practice. They have also been learning how to conjugate present tense -RE verbs with appropriate subject pronouns.

Jour de la Francophonie (French Day)

June 26, 2026, Auditions for the fashion runway and dance performances will take place in Weeks 3 and 4—please keep an eye on your emails for further details.

This whole-school celebration will feature performances from the French Choir, poetry, fashion, dance, and music, showcasing the richness and diversity of Francophone cultures from around the world.

French Poetry Competition (May)

Selected students are working hard in preparation for this month’s competition. We wish them the very best!

French Choir (Grades 3–6)

French Choir will continue this term on Mondays after school. Students who participated last year are asked to accept the Compass permission request.

If you would like to support your child’s learning at home, please make use of the resources provided in this newsletter. For Prep–Grade 2 students, songs have also been included to reinforce learning through music.

We look forward to another exciting term of language learning and cultural discovery at Tarneit Rise Primary School.

Warm regards,

Mr Zach, Madame Martine, Madame Ma & Mr Kirby French Team – Tarneit Rise Primary School
