Performing Arts News

Hi Tarneit Rise families,

Welcome to our Performing Arts fortnightly update for Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 2. Students across all year levels have continued developing their music skills through singing, listening, instrumental performance, composition and creative exploration. It has been wonderful to see students showing confidence, teamwork and persistence as they explore different ways music can be created and performed.

Our Prep students focused on exploring and responding to music through listening and practical music-making experiences. In Week 3, students listened to a variety of music and discussed how the music made them feel, demonstrating their understanding of how music can express different emotions and ideas. This formed part of their assessment for exploring music. In Week 4, students used their voices, bodies, and instruments to create music through singing, body percussion, and untuned percussion instruments. They practiced performing the “Flower Song” with body percussion to help keep the tempo steady.

Grade 1 students continued developing their glockenspiel skills throughout the fortnight. In Week 3, students learned how to play Rain Rain Go Away, focusing on note location, correct mallet technique, and maintaining a steady beat. In Week 4, they began learning Hot Cross Buns in preparation for their Week 5 performance. Students demonstrated growing confidence in following note patterns and performing melodies with increasing accuracy.

Grade 2 students also strengthened their glockenspiel performance skills during Weeks 3 and 4. In Week 3, students practiced playing Baby Shark, developing their rhythm, pitch accuracy, and coordination. In Week 4, they began learning Mary Had a Little Lamb as they prepared for their Week 5 performance. Students have shown excellent enthusiasm and persistence while building their instrumental music skills.

Grade 3 students began learning how to play Oh When the Saints on the keyboard in Week 3, with a focus on pitch and duration. In Week 4, students revised the musical elements of articulation and dynamics before continuing to practice the song with increasing attention to correct finger technique, duration, dynamics, and pitch accuracy. It has been wonderful to see students developing confidence on the keyboard while improving their performance skills.

Similarly, Grade 4 students began learning Count on Me on the keyboard in Week 3, focusing on pitch and duration. In Week 4, they revised articulation and dynamics before continuing to practice the song using correct finger technique and expressive performance skills. Students worked hard to improve their coordination and accuracy while performing on the keyboard.

Grade 5 students explored rhythm and texture through untuned percussion performance and composition tasks. In Week 3, students learned to follow layered rhythmic patterns in a 4/4 beat to create a thick texture. They then began composing the percussion section of a small group song inspired by a classroom text. In Week 4, students continued developing their compositions with a focus on rhythm, texture, tone, and timbre, showing creativity and teamwork throughout the process.

Grade 6 students built on similar composition and percussion tasks as the Grade 5 students, while working with increased complexity and independence. They explored more advanced layered rhythmic patterns and focused on creating detailed percussion arrangements for their small group compositions. Students demonstrated strong collaboration skills while refining their understanding of rhythm, texture, tone, and timbre in music composition.
