Grade 4 Community News

Dear Year 4 Families,

This term is continuing to be a busy and exciting one, with plenty of engaging learning opportunities, events, and activities planned for our students. Please keep an eye on upcoming newsletters and notices for important dates and updates.

Below is an overview of what students are learning across key curriculum areas, in weeks 3 and 4.

English:

We are excited to continue reading our class novel, Uncle Xbox. Once again, the Year 4 team would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the families who ensured your child has a copy of the book. Having a physical text greatly supports students in connecting deeply with the novel's plot. Through this rich text, students will explore themes, characters, and the author’s purpose, while continuing to strengthen their reading comprehension skills. They will participate in shared, guided, and independent reading activities to support their learning.

In writing, we will continue developing our understanding of factual recounts. Students will focus on text structure, writing in chronological order, and using time connectives, while further strengthening their spelling, grammar, and punctuation skills. Students have begun and will continue writing their historical recounts on Australian Colonisation and the impacts on First Nations Australians.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students are learning to solve missing number problems using number bonds, as well as solving addition problems with 3 or more single digit numbers. Students are continuing their learning of statistics and developing their skills of collecting and displaying data on bar graphs. Students will continue exploring elapsed time whilst using a timeline to calculate start and end times.

Throughout all areas, there will be a continued focus on problem-solving, with students encouraged to explain their thinking and reasoning when working through mathematical tasks.

Humanities:

In Humanities, students have been extending their knowledge of the Vikings. They have been learning about the Viking legacy and how their culture, art, and language have contributed to innovation and technology. We are also evaluating cultural exchange and lasting contributions to history in the present time.

Digital Technologies:

Year 4 students will continue developing their skills in using digital tools safely and effectively. They will be learning how to use strength to maintain a healthy balance between online and offline time and how this supports our overall well-being and success. Students will be challenged to be creative by making their own screen time strength machine inventions.

Respectful Relationships:

Respectful relationships are an important part of our classroom learning. This week, we will be learning to solve problems by thinking of different actions and understanding the consequences of those actions. Through this program, students will be supported in making choices when building positive relationships whilst continuing to develop their social and emotional skills.

REMINDERS:

• Students should bring their fully charged iPads to school each day.

• Please purchase Term 2 serial texts: Uncle Xbox by Jared Thomas and The Arrival by Shaun Tan, if you haven’t done so already.
