Grade 6 Community News

Dear year 6 Families,
Can you believe we're already into Week 4? The Grade 6 team has been so proud watching our students settle into the term with such enthusiasm and maturity. It's been a busy and rewarding few weeks, and the energy in our classrooms continues to be fantastic.
English
In Text Level Reading, the students are continuing to read The Silver Donkey. The students are exploring the impacts of war and the morals behind the stories told by Lieutenant Shepard. During the past two weeks of reading, the children have grappled with questions of bravery, loyalty, and what it means to do the right thing, while the soldier wrestles with guilt and longing as he waits for a way home. In Writing, the students have continued to work on their fables, ensuring to include features like personification, dialogue and moral.
In Sentence Level Writing, the students have been expanding sentences using, “Sound! Who + what it did + simile” structure, added direct speech to speaker tags and adverbials of manner and wrote a summary using, “who, what, when, where, why how.” The students have expanded their vocabulary, examining words from the text such as anguished and perilous.
Maths
Last week, students deepened their understanding of 3D shapes by exploring their cross sections. They investigated how different cuts reveal various 2D shapes and identified the key features needed to create a prism, strengthening their spatial reasoning and geometric vocabulary.
This week in Maths, students are kicking off an exciting new unit on Decimals! They will begin exploring a range of strategies to confidently add and subtract decimal numbers. Students will build a strong understanding of how decimals work and how to apply these skills in real-world contexts. We encourage you to ask your child about what they've been learning — perhaps they can even show you a strategy or two at home!
Humanities
This term, Year 6 students are building on their study of empires to explore how Australia became a nation through Federation. They'll investigate the debates, compromises, and key figures that shaped our Constitution before putting their learning into action with a mock election later in the term—a great opportunity to experience democracy firsthand!
Sport
The students have continued to participate in AFL, netball, softball, soccer, and volleyball on Friday afternoons as preparation for Gala Day continues. If your child has been selected for a Gala Day team, please use Compass to give permission for their participation in Gala Day if they have been selected for the team or the sports clinic being held at school.
Reminders
In week 5, Friday 22nd May, there will be a dress as your teacher day! Please encourage your child to participate and get creative with their dress. This is a gold coin donation to raise money for their graduation.
