Visual Arts News

Wominjeka families,
Time is flying, and it’s already Week 4 of Term 2! Our students have been working hard building new art skills, and we’re excited to share what they’ve been creating.
Prep
Last week, we read The Chameleon’s True Colors by Yuliya Pankratova and practiced drawing repeating patterns using a variety of lines.
This week, students will create an Aboriginal art–inspired serpent. We will continue revising the colours of the rainbow and use different line types to create texture.
At home: You can support your child by revising the colours of the rainbow in the correct order and practicing different types of lines, such as curvy and zigzag lines.
Grade 1
This week, we will continue creating our colour wheel lion masks to practice primary and secondary colours.
At home: Encourage your child to mix primary colours and explore which secondary colours they can create.
Grade 2
This week, we will continue creating our colour wheel eyes to practise primary and secondary colours.
At home: Encourage your child to mix primary colours and explore which secondary colours they can create.
Grade 3
Last week, we completed our opal gemstones using watercolours and learned about organic shapes (irregular, natural shapes).
This week, we will be making pinch pot owls using air-dry clay. The focus will be on sculpture techniques such as scoring to add details, using clay tools, and learning the pinch pot method.
At home: Practise drawing geometric versus organic shapes.
Grade 4
This week, we will continue adding detail to our 3D watercolour gemstones. Students are focusing on using darker shades to create shadows and lighter tints to show highlights and depth.
At home: Practise drawing 3D shapes and gemstones with facets.
Grade 5
Last week, we completed our Modroc sculptures of natural disasters, focusing on using colour to reflect the chosen event and its associated emotions.
This week, students will create a Northern Lights silhouette using watercolours. The focus will be on blending with watercolour pencils and adding silhouettes to create a sense of depth.
At home: Encourage your child to practise blending colours (e.g. using coloured pencils or paints) to create smooth gradients, and experiment with drawing simple silhouettes/shadows.
Grade 6
Last week, we finished painting our Modroc sculptures inspired by Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh. Students focused on identifying how they were inspired by the artist and on colour mixing.
This week, we are beginning our sculpture vases using paper mâché, focusing on building an armature (a strong framework or skeleton).
At home: Encourage your child to sketch different vase shapes and designs, or build simple structures using recyclable materials (e.g. cardboard or newspaper) to practise creating strong frameworks.
