Grade 5 Community News

Hello Year 5 families!

Term 2 has been off to a busy and productive start, with 2 incursions taking place in Week 3. We had an excellent input on anti-bullying by the Stand-Up Project, as well as a visit from an MP, Milton Dick, to talk to us about Civics.

English

In English, we are finalising our first unit of the term, Understanding Economics. Students have been completing their written pitches using key ideas from the unit, including consumer needs versus wants, resourcing, and target audience. Students have worked hard to plan and publish their written pitch using our SPO paragraph structure. They then had to use creativity and problem-solving to convert their written pitch into a digital presentation, which they will present to their peers. Students must use persuasive high modality language, creativity, and different eye-catching elements in order to make their pitch as persuasive as possible. We have faith that some of these inventions created by our budding entrepreneurs will make it to the marketplace in the near future!

Mathematics

In Mathematics, pupils have recently finished the unit on perimeter and area of shapes, which included problems in real life contexts to further their knowledge and understanding. Classes then focused on the topic of fractions, where they learned the difference between mixed numerals and improper fractions and how to convert between the two. Pupils learned that number lines don’t always use just whole numbers… they can use fractions too! Our latest topic in maths is 3D Shapes, where pupils get the opportunity to identify and draw nets of 3D shapes, then design their own 3D shapes for packaging products. Please continue to practice times tables facts, short division, and skip counting to help pupils’ understanding of multiplication and division - number knowledge is key for growth!
