Supporting Positive Behaviour at Bundoora Primary School

This term, we are excited to share that Daniel Kret has taken on the role of leading our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) initiative. Working alongside our existing SWPBS team, and supported by our Department lead Daniel Ioannidis, Daniel will help guide the ongoing implementation of SWPBS across our school as we continue to strengthen a positive, safe and respectful learning environment for every student.

What is SWPBS?

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a whole-school approach that focuses on explicitly teaching, modelling and reinforcing the behaviours we want to see every day. Rather than simply responding when things go wrong, SWPBS helps create a consistent, positive school culture where students know what is expected and feel supported to make positive choices.

At Bundoora Primary School, our shared behavioural expectations are simple:

• Be Respectful
• Be Responsible
• Be Safe

These expectations guide the way we learn, play and interact with one another in classrooms, specialist programs, the playground and beyond.

What does this look like at school?

You may have already heard your child using the phrases Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. These three expectations are becoming part of our everyday language as teachers consistently reinforce positive behaviours and explicitly teach students what these expectations look like in different learning environments.

So far on our SWPBS journey, we have introduced:

• A whole-school Behaviour Expectations Matrix that clearly outlines expected behaviours across different areas of the school.
• A consistent Behaviour Flowchart to support fair and predictable responses to behaviour.
• Common language used by all staff when discussing behaviour with students.
• Posters and visual reminders displayed throughout the school to reinforce our expectations.

Throughout this term, we will continue building on this work by introducing:

• A consistent Return to Class Protocol to support successful re-entry into learning following behaviour incidents.
• A school-wide positive behaviour recognition and reward system to celebrate students who consistently demonstrate our school values.
• Ongoing monitoring and refinement of our practices to ensure students experience a consistent approach across every classroom and learning space.

Celebrating Positive Behaviour

One of the ways we celebrate our students is through Positive Chronicles. These are sent home by teachers to recognise students who have demonstrated our school expectations through acts of respect, responsibility and safe choices.

Receiving a Positive Chronicle is something to be proud of. We encourage families to take a moment to celebrate these achievements with their child, as recognising positive behaviour at both school and home helps reinforce the habits and values we want to see continue.

To further acknowledge these wonderful efforts, Principal Sherrin Strathairn will also recognise students who have received a Positive Chronicle during our weekly assemblies.

Working Together

One of our key goals is to strengthen the partnership between school and home. We know that students are most successful when the messages they receive are consistent across both environments.

We encourage families to use the same language at home:

• Be Safe

By sharing these expectations both at school and at home, we can help students build confidence, develop positive habits and make great choices wherever they are.
