Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,
What a pleaseant and indepth fortnight of learning we have had ! Students have shown engagement, open-mindedness and displayed inquisitive behaviours across all learning areas. We also welcome back Mr Vella in 2G who has enjoyed seeing his class after his leave. We also thank Ms Jenkins for continuing and supporting the year two learning with us!
Reading
Students have inquisitively engaged in our class novel started in week 6, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. As we continue to deepen our comprehension strategies, students have explored rich vocabulary, using the text clues and prior knowledge to define these words to expand and enhance their understanding of texts.
Students have also began to use a deeper strategy such as 'inferring', where they have communicated what they thought the message of the sentence or picture was and justified how they knew. It was wonderful seeing so many enthusiastically engage along with own copies with their teachers as they read thogether.
Writing & Spelling
Students continued to explore our Unit of Inquiry through writing. We read "Somebody's Land" and explored 'connection to a place and land'. Students made connections with their own experiences and wrote a reccount exploring the 5w's (who, what, when, where and why), recount struncture and word choices.
In Spelling, students reviewed the past tense spelling rules using the -ed suffix, as well as plural spelling patterns. Students practiced applying these spelling patterns during their independent writing tasks. Students continue to receive personal spelling words where they show what they have learnt on Friday's, receiving new words the following week.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students continued to explore Number, in particulr Subtraction. Students explored new ways to solve bigger number problems, using an open numberline. Students continue to partition numbers, using their knowledge of place Value to help solve subtraction equations.
Inquiry
We are well underway with our new Unit of Inquiry “Sharing the Planet.” The Central idea being " All cultures share the planet with First Nations Peoples". Students read 'The Rainbow Serpant". We discussed this and students shared a special place they felt connected to, explored how living things use at share the same land as we do and then collectively created a rule to care fro the environemnt.
Wellbeing
Across both weeks, students explored the specific actions that help a team work well together to solve a problems and to understand how teamwork and cooperation can help us when we face challenges in the classroom, playground, or life. They explored this through describing actions such as staying calm, communicating and following the rules of a game.
