Year 7-9 Update

As we enter the final three weeks of Term Two, it is wonderful to reflect on the significant learning, growth, and achievements that have taken place across Years 7–9. Students have engaged in a wide range of learning experiences, challenged themselves academically, and continued to build positive relationships within our school community. We are proud of the effort and resilience many students have demonstrated throughout the term and look forward to finishing the semester strongly.

As we move towards the end of term, we ask families to support us in maintaining our high expectations around attendance, punctuality, and uniform. Arriving at school and to class on time ensures students are ready to learn and do not miss important instructions or learning opportunities. Students who arrive late should continue to sign in through the General Office before heading to class.

We also remind families to ensure students are wearing the correct school uniform each day. Consistent uniform standards help foster a sense of belonging and pride in our school community. If there are circumstances affecting a student's ability to meet uniform expectations, please contact the school so we can provide support where needed.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support. We look forward to a productive and successful conclusion to the term.

Year 7 Humanities - Ancient History

This term in Year 7 Humanities, students explored the fascinating world of Ancient History. They investigated how people lived in ancient societies, including Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome, while also learning about the rich history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Students examined daily life, beliefs, achievements and the lasting impact these civilisations have had on the modern world. Through research, class activities and assessment tasks that let students get creative, students developed their historical thinking skills and gained a deeper understanding of how the past continues to shape our lives today.

Year 8 Humanities - Medieval History

In Year 8, students have been exploring Medieval Europe and developing their understanding of life during this period in history. Students investigated the feudal system and how society was structured, examined medieval medical practices, and analysed the powerful influence that religion had on the daily lives of people. Students also explored the historical significance of the Magna Carta and its impact on rights and governance. A key area of study was The Black Death, where students examined how this event affected the population, economy, and society of Europe.

Looking ahead, students will begin learning about Feudal Japan and will compare its social structure, culture, and traditions with those of Medieval Europe in preparation for their assignment, due later this term.

Year 9 Humanities - Forces of Change: History Unit

This term, students explored some of the most significant events that shaped the modern world. Through investigations into the Industrial Revolution, students examined how new technologies transformed society, improved living standards for some, and created challenges for others. They considered different perspectives on industrialisation and debated how governments responded rising issues.

Students then examined the colonisation of Australia, learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ deep connections to Country before European arrival, the reasons Britain established colonies in Australia, and the impacts of colonisation on different groups.

Finally, students investigated World War I, including its causes, the changing nature of warfare, the Gallipoli campaign, and the consequences of the war. Throughout the unit,  students formed factions and analysed historical sources, participated in debates and simulations, and developed their ability to evaluate historical events from multiple perspectives.

Saltwater College (Year 7's) vs The Grange (Year 7's)

On the 15th of May, our Year Seven students had the exciting opportunity to visit The Grange P–12 College for a practice volleyball match against their sports academy students. This match provided a valuable chance for our students to apply the skills and tactics they have been developing during their enrichment hour on Tuesdays.

Our boys’ team played with great teamwork, though they were narrowly defeated by a more experienced side.

Drama

In year 7, Students have been sampling the smorgasbord of all drama has to offer, ranging from short scripted pieces, to improvised play, to taking a seat in the directors chair through a range of physical workshops and "performance challenges". Students have also investigated some theoretical ideas, such as the history of theatrical practices, and the very things that make their favourite actors so special. Through this, students have been not just emerged as strong performers, but also, as confident speakers in any setting who take risks and respect the creative and learning process.

In year 8, students have been combining the world of animation and film study with performance elements; creating stop-motion projects, and thrilling short-films to showcase their creativity and understanding of the elements of drama. Moving on from this, some studets are now engaging in a play-study, where they will interpret scenes from a play and put them together to create a short performance of "8 minutes left" - a play about how people spend their last minutes on earth before total human extinction.

In year 9, students have exploring script analysis and how their understanding of a text can translate into a physical reality. They have learned about the steps involved of designing and making a set for a stage production and have begun the process of creating set miniatures for their chosen scenes from "The Wizard of OZ Jr."
