Year Three

Dear Year Three Families,
It's been such an exciting couple of weeks in Year 3. The Year 3 students have brought great effort and enthusiasm to everything they've tackled, and we're proud to share some of the highlights with you.
Reading
In Reading, the children have been exploring nonfiction texts and learning to identify the features that make them unique. Using texts about community systems as their focus, they have been recognising elements such as headings, subheadings, diagrams, captions and glossaries, and understanding how these features help readers locate and make sense of information.
Writing & Spelling
In Writing, students have been developing their note-taking skills as they inquire into systems in our community. Using a range of materials including newspapers, non-fiction books and videos, they have been practising how to identify key information and record it in their own words.
In Spelling, students have been on the hunt for words containing the long 'e' sound, collecting examples and sorting them into groups based on their spelling patterns. Through this, they have been exploring patterns such as 'ee', 'ea' and 'ey', building a stronger understanding of how the same sound can be represented in different ways.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been getting hands-on with data collection, using tally marks to record information and then representing it visually through pictographs and bar graphs. Alongside this, they have been interpreting data — learning to read graphs and explain what the information tells them.
Students have been developing their additive thinking by exploring a range of strategies including Part-Part-Whole, Place Value Strategy and Split Strategy. By using these strategies, students developed confidence and flexible mathematical thinking skills.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, the children have been exploring the concept of systems. Learning that a system is a group of connected parts that work together to achieve a purpose. They have been examining examples of systems in our community, such as transport, water and waste, and discussing what makes a system work well. From there, they have also been thinking critically about what makes a system ineffective or in need of improvement, considering factors such as fairness, efficiency and impact on the community.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, the children have been reflecting on the similarities and differences that exist between people, and exploring how these can shape the way we relate to and get along with others. Through thoughtful discussions and activities, they have been developing empathy and appreciation for the diverse perspectives and qualities that each person brings to our classroom community.

Kind regards,
The Grade 3 Team
