Year One

Dear Year One Families,

Welcome to another exciting time of learning in Grade 1! Our new Unit of Inquiry is How We Express Ourselves, with the central idea that our feelings can change how we think, act and treat others. Throughout this unit, students will explore poetry, in both reading and writing lessons. We look forward to seeing students develop their creativity and confidence as they share their ideas through discussions.

Reading

Students have continued to develop their comprehension skills by learning and applying "Good Reader" strategies. Students have focussed on checking whether words look right, sound right, and make sense while reading. Students have also practised making predictions before and during reading by using clues from the title, pictures, and text.

Writing

Students have been exploring poetry through the emotions of happiness and sadness. They brainstormed vocabulary and experiences connected to these feelings and recorded their ideas in their Writer's Notebooks. Using these seed ideas, students drafted poems and experimented with descriptive language. Students then edited and published their poems, focusing on neat handwriting, finger spaces and punctuation. Their completed poems will become part of their own poetry books.

Phonics

During Phonics, students have been focussing on the consonant blends bl, cl, pl and sl. Students participated in sound hunts, word building activities, dictation, fluency practice and sentence writing to strengthen their understanding of these blends.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been developing their addition skills by exploring how two parts combine to make a whole. They have used Part-Part-Whole models, number lines and hands-on materials to solve problems. Students have also been practising their facts to 10 and doubles facts to build fluency and confidence when solving addition problems.
