Level 5

Week 8 is here! This term has flown by, there have been so many wonderful activities and events and so many more to look forward to.

Literacy Day

We had a wonderful time celebrating Literacy Day! So many students went all out with their costumes, dressing up as a wonderful variety of characters from many different books.

We also enjoyed an inspiring visit from Andrea Rowe, the author of many popular picture books, including the award-winning, Jetty Jumping. It was a wonderful opportunity to hear about her experiences as an author and celebrate the joy of reading and storytelling.

SEPEP

Level 5 students are loving SEPEP (Sports Education in Physical Education Program) on Monday afternoons. Students have taken an active role in designing and managing their own sporting season, coming together to decide which sports they would like to play, establish and agree upon rules, organise teams, and determine how their competitions will run. This student-centred approach provides valuable opportunities for student voice, choice and autonomy, while developing skills in collaboration, leadership, organisation, communication, decision-making and fair play. Rather than simply participating in sport, students are learning what it takes to plan, manage and take ownership of a sporting program.

Literacy

Over the past few weeks, Level 5 students have been reading and writing about different countries and comparing them to Australia. We have been researching, taking notes and then creating a website on Google. Our students have really engaged with learning about different cultures, population, age structures, lifestyles and languages. We have been learning about report writing and how to write a comparison.

Numeracy

Throughout Week 7 Level 5 students explored Statistics. They were able to plan and conduct statistical investigations by posing and refining questions to collect categorical or numerical data by survey. They were able to analyse and interpret the data and communicate findings within the context of the investigation. Students explored line graphs, stem and leaf plots and dot plots while calculating the mean, median, mode and range

During Week 8, Level 5 students will learn about Probability. They will describe probabilities using fractions, decimals and percentages and recognise that probabilities lie on numerical scales of 0–1 or 0%–100%. Students will use language such as certain, likely, equal chance, unlikely and impossible to describe the probability of something happening. They will conduct repeated chance experiments and run simulations with an increasing number of trials then compare observations with expected results.

Here is a great resource full of great Maths games.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, Level 5 students have been exploring Geography, interconnections and our place in the world, investigating how Australia and its people are connected to other places and communities across the globe. In recent weeks, we have narrowed our focus to the Asia–Pacific region and our near neighbours, exploring the geographical features and connections that make this region significant. Students have compared Australia with other countries, examining population, economies, customs, cultures and social structures, and considering how these similarities and differences influence people’s daily lives. Students have also investigated the ways Australia is connected to other countries through trade, tourism, migration, environmental connections and cultural links. This learning has connected beautifully with our Numeracy focus on statistics, with students using data, graphs and Venn diagrams to record, compare and communicate their findings.
