Future Health Professionals Gain Insight at Health Careers Forum
A group of students with an interest in pursuing a career in healthcare were fortunate to attend the recent Health Careers Forum, organised by North East Health and Charles Sturt University, with generous support from major sponsor Garry Nash Real Estate.
In the lead-up to the event, students selected workshops aligned with their interests, choosing from areas such as paramedicine, occupational therapy, podiatry, nutrition, speech pathology, nursing, social work, mental health, and drugs and alcohol counselling.
The day began with a warm welcome from our local Member of Parliament, Helen Haines, who shared her inspiring journey—from beginning her career as a nurse to representing our region in Parliament.
Students then observed a simulated emergency department scenario, where doctors and nurses demonstrated their roles using simulation mannequins. This gave students a real-world insight into how healthcare professionals work together in high-pressure situations.
Following the simulation, students participated in their chosen workshops, each designed to showcase the wide range of career opportunities within the healthcare industry. They gained valuable knowledge about study pathways, day-to-day job responsibilities, and the personal rewards that come with working in health.
To conclude the day, students heard from current university students who shared their personal journeys and experiences within their courses, offering valuable insights into life at university and what to expect when pursuing a career in health
The expo was an eye-opening and inspiring experience for all involved, helping students to better understand the many exciting possibilities in the world of healthcare.
