Exciting Things Happening in the Mathematics Department at Wangaratta High School

The Mathematics Department at Wangaratta High School has been buzzing with energy and enthusiasm this year, with a series of exciting activities designed to engage students and foster a love of problem solving.

One of the highlights of the year so far has been the Maths Games Day, which saw students from Years 7 to 10 compete in small teams in a range of fun and challenging problem-solving activities. The atmosphere was electric as students worked together, applied their mathematical thinking, and raced against the clock to complete each task. After a tight competition, the winning team was announced: Chase Lovell, Isabelle Moffat, Ella Smith and Shaylee Harris took out first place. Congratulations to all students who participated – your teamwork and persistence were outstanding!

Another exciting initiative was the Pirate-Themed Maths Escape Room, which transformed the PAC into a world of treasure maps, riddles, and hidden clues. Students worked in small groups to solve a series of mathematical challenges in order to reclaim stolen treasure. The engaging storyline and clever puzzles made it a fun and immersive way for students to apply critical thinking and problem solving in a collaborative environment.

Looking ahead to Term 3, the excitement continues with 75 students from across the school set to participate in the prestigious Australian Mathematics Competition. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to test their mathematical abilities on a national stage, and we’re proud to see so many eager to take on the challenge.

The Mathematics Department is committed to making maths engaging, hands-on, and fun – and with so many exciting opportunities already underway and more to come, it's a great time to be a maths student at Wangaratta High School!
