Music - Have you seen so many Saxophones?

Wangaratta High School Represent in Melbourne!

On Saturday August 2nd, the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (MCM; under the University of Melbourne umbrella) hosted their annual SAXOPHONE MEGA DAY at their Southbank campus.

This event has been running for some years in a few different forms, but is an astounding opportunity for all saxophone afficionados to learn, play and listen alongside masters and students alike for FREE!!

With a series of rehearsals, workshops and masterclasses during the day, the event culminated with a showcase concert including featured guests like Joseph Lallo (Head Lecturer of Saxophone at Unimelb), Yo-yo Su (Melbourne), Nick Russionello (Sydney) and Diana Tolmie (QLD); as well as the ultimate MEGA SAX ENSEMBLE featuring THREE OF OUR VERY OWN WHS STUDENTS!

In attendance from our school were the tenor brothers Darby and Elliott Rowles; the latter even performing a piece from his VCE Repertoire for Saxophone Lecturer Joseph Lallo in a Masterclass. 20mins with a great teacher can make a huge impact!

Also present were a couple of our juniors - Perez Lawson who came to watch with his family, and young Jillian Shaw who jumped in the deep end to play in the mass ensemble with only 6-months experience on the instrument! Just being in the room is the most important thing - what an incredible effort!

WHS Teachers Carlia (saxophone) and Mrs. Lawson were also present to enjoy the day.

An enormous CONGRATULATIONS to our students for attending and playing, and a huge thankyou to the parents for getting there. Lots was learned and fun was had, so looking forward to an even bigger turnout next year!

The MCM also holds events for other instruments - the Sunday after was the French Horn Mega Day, so keep an eye out for those in future fellow instrumentalists!
