Year One

The Colour Monster
During our Start Up Unit, we revisited the Zones of Regulation through the beautiful story The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas. Students reconnected with their prior learning and explored how different colours can represent different feelings. As we read the story, we paused to make predictions and connections, discussing what each colour might mean and how it linked to the Zones of Regulation. Students reflected on the important understanding that everyone experiences a range of emotions, feelings can change quickly, and while all feelings are okay, we aim to use strategies to help ourselves return to the green zone - where we feel calm, focused and ready to learn.
To deepen their understanding, students created their own “Zone Colour Monster” puppets in red, yellow, blue or green. They then worked collaboratively to act out short scenarios, demonstrating how their monster might feel and what strategies could help. This learning experience supported students in building emotional awareness, language around feelings, and resilience as they practised recognising and managing different emotions.
