School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

At ENPS, we are now in our third year of implementing School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS). This whole-school approach helps us create a positive and supportive learning environment where every child understands what is expected and feels confident in meeting those expectations.
A key part of SWPBS is recognising that positive behaviour, just like reading or maths, needs to be explicitly taught, practised and acknowledged. Rather than waiting for problems to arise, we proactively teach students what positive behaviour looks like in different settings and celebrate when they make great choices. This helps all students feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
Our approach is built around our schools core values: Safe, Kind and Respectful. These values guide everything we do. They are visible around the school and regularly discussed in classrooms. Students learn what being safe, kind and respectful looks like in the classroom, in the playground and across our wider school community.
To make expectations clear and consistent, we use a behaviour matrix that outlines what Safe, Kind and Respectful behaviours look like in different areas of the school. Teachers explicitly teach these expectations and revisit them throughout the year. Each week, classes also focus on a particular behaviour to strengthen understanding and build consistency across the school. The Term One behaviour matrix and weekly focus are included below for your reference.
Week | Value | Setting | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|---|
Week 1 |
Introduction of school values | ||
Week 2 | |||
Week 3 | Respectful | During break time | We sit calmly and eat in our designated areas |
Week 4 | Safe | Moving around the school | We walk in a calm and orderly manner |
Week 5 | Respectful | Toilets | We are quiet and sensible in the toilets |
Week 6 | Respectful | During learning time | We actively engage in learning tasks and do our best |
Week 7 | Kind | During learning time | We include others and work collaboratively |
Week 8 | Safe | During learning time | We keep hands feet and objects to ourselves |
Week 9 | Respectful | During learning time | We actively listen to our teachers and peers |
Week 10 | Kind | During learning time | We help others |
You may also hear your child talk about receiving a token. Our SWPBS tokens are one way we recognise and reinforce positive behaviours.
Foundation to Year Two: Students earn a tangible item (such as a rock or pom-pom) that is added to a class jar. This recognises collective effort and teamwork. When the jar is full, the class earns a reward chosen by the teacher and aligned with year-level expectations.
Year Three to Year Six: Students receive individual tokens. These are entered into a weekly class draw and acknowledged at Friday cohort meetings.
If you have attended a school assembly, you may have also seen our lunch draw. Students can receive tokens from specialist teachers, school leaders and education support staff for demonstrating positive behaviours. These tokens go into either a lower-years or upper-years draw. At assembly, students from each draw are selected to receive a free lunch order and enjoy a special lunch with the Principal. They can even bring a friend along too. It is always a highlight of our week!
We encourage families to talk with their children about how they show they are being safe, kind and respectful at school. These conversations at home help reinforce our shared expectations and strengthen the important partnership between school and home.
