Year Four

A very warm welcome back to school for Term Two! It has been wonderful to see smiling students return, full of enthusiasm and ready for learning and fun.

Literacy

This term the Year Four team have begun building skills with the students in preparation for Book Club, through a literature study on The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. We are also investigating tiered vocabulary and understanding how it is connected to our unit of inquiry, and working on strategies to clarify tier 3 language to understand the information presented. Students have worked through the writing process to create non-fiction texts such as information reports, on a topic of their choosing in relation to the Earth's resources.

Mathematics

The Year Four students are developing a range of strategies to support their additive thinking. They have practised fact families and part-part: whole to consolidate their understanding of the relationship between addition and subtraction. Other strategies students have parctised are the jump-strategy, partitioning/split strategy and compensation strategy.

Sharing the Planet

Students' thinking, communication and social skills were put to the test when tasked with the collaborative construction of a bridge with a limited supply of resources. Using their prior knowledge of acquiring resources, students soon realised that trading was an important aspect to achieving their goal. The relational aspect between groups became key in negotiating deals, and students began to understand the value of highly sought after resources.

When investigating which countries are rich in natural resources, students were required to use materials such as paper maps, globes or search engines to locate and label the top ten countries on their own blank world maps. Using a key, they successfully illustrated each of the countries' resources.

Athletics Carnival

Wednesday the 29th of April was a hugely successful day when the year 4 students represented their houses and age groups at the Athletics Carnival. From high jump to hurdles and shot put to discuss, students supported their peers at each event with enthusiasm. A fantastic effort was made by all trying their hand at something new. A big congratulations to all students who received ribbons for their outstanding performance in their event.
