Prep

Dear Prep Students and Families,
It has been lovely to see all the smiling faces of our preps back and ready to learn in Term 2! We have hit the ground running with our learning this term.
READING:
In reading we learnt about the importance of Anzac Day by exploring the significance of red poppies before creating a poppy craft. We discussed how brave Australian and New Zealander soldiers were as they went to war to defend our country. We have also continued our focus on phonological awareness as we work towards applying this to our reading later this term. Students have continued to focus on identifying rhyming words through nursery rhymes such as Hickory Dickory Dock. We built on this by learning about syllables in Week 2. We have explored our names, the classroom and the school environment when developing an understanding of syllables.
WRITING:
One of the best way to engage early writers is to have shared experiences that we can use oral language to discuss and then write about. This is called a language experience approach and we are introducing it to our preps this term. We kicked it off in a delicious way this week with the preps making fairy bread in class! They were so excited to participate in this learning experience and there was some fantastic writing completed based on our shared language experience!
We are developing our ability to use our understanding of letter sounds when we are writing as well. As we continue to explore the different sounds that letters can make, students will be able to use this knowledge to help them sound out the words they would like to write.
MATHS:
In maths we are developing our number sense by learning about counting and subitising. We have played lots of fun maths games that help us consolidate our understanding of numbers to 10. Students are also practising writing their numerals and matching the written numeral to physical materials that represent that number.
UNIT OF INQUIRY:
Our second Unit of Inquiry launched in week 2! Our provocation included an exhibition of toys from many different time periods. Students were able to observe the difference between modern toys and toys from previous generations. Afterwards we talked about how toys have changed over time, and wondered why this might be? This will be the focus of our unit of inquiry across the term. Students will investigate the purpose of toys, how and why they have changed in the past, and what toys might be like in the future.
Mother's Day Stall
From Monday the 4th to Friday the 8th of May, all students will have the opportunity to visit the Mother's Day stall with their class. If your child wishes to purchase any products, please send them to to school with money and a bag to put their purchases in.
REMINDERS:
Prep students will begin using iPads in Term Two. Your child’s iPad will need to be configured by our IT team to enable them to use them at school.
Students are expected to bring their satchel to school EVERY DAY.
Please provide a set of spare clothing for those little unforeseen accidents.
Please ensure all of your child’s belongings are clearly labelled with their first and last name.
Snack and lunch times are 20 minutes long. Please encourage your child to eat snack/lunch within 20 minutes as this will help them to follow the school routine.
Kind Regards
The Prep Team
