Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break. It has been wonderful to see how quickly students have settled back into routines, demonstrating a positive attitude and readiness for learning.
Reading:
In Reading, students are exploring poetry and making strong connections to our new Unit of Inquiry. They are learning to identify poetic features and language choices, while analysing how poems use patterns, imagery, and creativity to convey meaning.
Building on this, students have also been exploring figurative language across a range of text types. This has supported their understanding of how authors create vivid imagery and patterns through language, including the use of similes, metaphors, alliteration, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia.
Writing:
In Writing, students are also focusing on poetry, experimenting with different forms and structures. They are using descriptive language, rhythm, and imagery to create their own pieces, inspired by patterns and ideas explored through our Unit of Inquiry.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics, we are continuing our work on Place Value. Students are exploring numbers up to and beyond 10,000, including sequencing, ordering, and renaming numbers. They are developing a deeper understanding of how each digit’s position determines its value.
Inquiry:
Unit of Inquiry 2
Transdisciplinary Theme: How We Express Ourselves
Central Idea: Patterns and colours in nature inspire our creativity
To launch our new Unit of Inquiry, students participated in a whole Year 3 provocation day centred around a range of art forms. This experience explored patterns in nature, Aboriginal art, modern building designs, and the work of Yayoi Kusama, with a focus on dot art. Students had the opportunity to create their own dot-inspired exhibition piece, as well as collaboratively design a large flower mural, with every student contributing to the final artwork. This engaging experience has sparked curiosity and creativity as students begin to explore how patterns can inspire artistic expression.
Upcoming Events:
Year 3 Clay Incursion on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th May, with a cost of $18 per student.
Year 3 Athletics day Carnival Tuesday 5th May.
