Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,
It has been a fantastic start to Term Two, with students settling back into routines quickly and approaching their learning with focus and enthusiasm. It has been great to see them reconnect with their peers, re-establish positive learning habits, and build strong momentum for the term ahead.
Literacy
In Reading, Students have been exploring Dreaming stories and Indigenous poetry, with a focus on developing their clarifying and questioning skills. They have been learning to recognise when meaning breaks down and to apply strategies such as rereading, using context clues, and discussing ideas with others.
In Writing, Students have been introduced to poetry through engaging experiences. They explored “found poetry,” selecting and rearranging words from existing texts to create new pieces with fresh meaning. Students also began experimenting with figurative language, particularly metaphors, and how these can be used to enhance imagery, creativity, and expression in their writing.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, Students have been exploring 3D objects and their nets. They have investigated how two-dimensional shapes can be folded to create three-dimensional forms, identifying features such as faces, edges, and vertices. Through hands-on tasks and collaborative activities, Students have been developing their spatial reasoning, accuracy, and problem-solving skills.
Unit of Inquiry
Our new Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves, has begun with a focus on cultural storytelling. Students explored how stories can be told through different forms, including art, dance, written stories, oral stories, and symbols, and contributed ideas and questions through the inquiry process.
Students have unpacked the central idea, developed an understanding of key concepts and generated thoughtful questions to guide their inquiry and deepen their thinking.
Other Highlights
Students participated in ANZAC Day learning, reflecting on its significance through class discussions and a creative silhouette task that allowed them to express their understanding in a meaningful way.
We also celebrated an important milestone with Students receiving their pen licences, recognising their growing responsibility, independence, and pride in presenting their work.
Additionally, Students had an exciting visit from Melbourne Storm NRL players. During this session, students learned about the importance of nutrition, hydration, and resilience in both sport and everyday life. They were also given team posters and had the opportunity to have them signed by the players, making the experience both engaging and memorable.
Reminders:
On P.E days and Fridays, students are permitted to wear their P.E uniform. All other days, the academic uniform should be worn.
