Year One

Dear Year One Families,
We hope you have all had a wonderful start to Term Two. It has been great to see the students showing such a positive attitude towards learning and putting in a fantastic effort each day. They have been working hard in the classroom,
Reading
In Reading, we have been exploring non-fiction texts and learning how they are organised differently from fiction. We focused on identifying key text features such as the contents page, photographs, captions, the index and the glossary. Students practised using these features to find information and build a deeper understanding of what they are reading. This has helped students become more confident at locating key facts.
During our decoding lessons, students practised using chunking to break longer words into smaller parts, sound them out, and blend them together. For example, when trying to read the word ship, students can chunk it into sh+ ip. They recognise the digraph sh in ship, say each part aloud, and then blend them together: sh + ip → ship
Phonics
In Phonics, we have been learning about the phoneme /th/. We enjoyed reading The Thing That Went Thump along with a variety of other texts featuring the /th/ sound. Students have been practising writing word lists and sentences such as, “The thunder made a loud thump.”
Writing
In Writing, Grade 1 students have been learning how to write factual sentences. They researched topics such as the sun and the moon, using texts, videos, and class discussions to build their understanding. Students then recorded facts they had learnt, focusing on writing clear sentences with capital letters, full stops, and finger spaces. They then created a class display, sharing their learning with others.
Maths
In Mathematics, Grade 1 students have continued to develop their understanding of number and place value, including sequencing numbers, expanding 2 and 3 digit numbers, and representing numbers in different ways using hundreds, tens, and ones. They have practised ordering numbers from smallest to largest and strengthened their knowledge of place value using expanded form (e.g. 23 = 20 + 3). In addition, they have been ordering and naming the months of the year and beginning to understand calendars and key events.
