Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,

Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you all enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable break. It has been a positive start to the term, with students returning settled, focused and ready to continue building on their learning. We look forward to another busy and engaging term as students continue to grow in confidence, independence and capability.

Reading

In Reading, students continued developing their understanding of historical texts, with a focus on timelines and key events in Australia’s history. They practised identifying key information, making connections between past and present, and strengthening their fluency and comprehension. We are also beginning our book clubs and look forward to students engaging with rich novels and meaningful discussions.

Writing

Students planned, drafted and published their historical narratives, using their research to create engaging and historically accurate pieces linked to the Unit of Inquiry. There was a strong focus on narrative structure, including orientation, problem and resolution, as well as using precise vocabulary to enhance their writing.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students explored Measurement, with a focus on calculating the area of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms. They applied formulas to solve real-world problems and investigated the relationship between area and perimeter. Students were encouraged to explain their thinking and apply their understanding to more complex tasks.

Unit of Inquiry Two -

Where We Are In Place & Time

This fortnight, students completed our second Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time. Throughout this unit, students explored how historical events have shaped Australia, developing their understanding of timelines, historical perspectives, and the ongoing impact of colonisation on society today.

Unit of Inquiry Three -

How We Organise Ourselves

To launch our new Unit of Inquiry, students participated in an engaging provocation where they were immersed in a series of interactive role plays exploring different government systems. Without being told which system they were experiencing, students moved through scenarios representing anarchy, communism, dictatorship and democracy, each facilitated by their teachers.

This hands-on experience prompted rich discussion, curiosity and reflection, as students began to question fairness, decision-making, power and leadership. It provided a strong foundation for the unit, allowing students to connect their experiences to how systems and organisation shape communities and influence the way we live.

In the coming weeks, we look forward to sending two groups of Year 6 students to attend camp in Canberra. This is an exciting opportunity for students to explore our nation’s capital and deepen their understanding of Australia’s history, government and identity.

During the camp, students will visit key national sites, including Parliament House, where they will learn firsthand about how decisions are made at a federal level. This experience will strongly support our current Unit of Inquiry, helping students make real-world connections to systems, leadership and how our country is organised. We look forward to hearing about their experiences upon their return.

Melbourne Storm Visit

On Tuesday 21st, the entire Year 5 and 6 cohorts were privileged to attend an assembly run by Jahrome Hughes from the Melbourne Storm. He spoke to students about making healthy choices and what it takes to be a professional athlete.

Selected students from years 5-9 also had the opportunity to participate in a clinic run by Jahrome Hughes, where they further developed their skills and engaged in hands-on activities. It was a valuable and engaging experience for all students.

Summer Sports

Summer sports took place today, with students representing the school across basketball, volleyball, softball, tennis and cricket. It was fantastic to see students demonstrating teamwork, sportsmanship and resilience throughout the day. We look forward to sharing results and highlights in our next newsletter.

We look forward to a fantastic term ahead and thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,

The Year Six Team
