Year Two

Dear Year Two families,
Welcome back for Term Two! This exciting term has seen us begin a new Unit of Inquiry, attending Swimming, and beginning new Specialist rotations.
Please note the following:
Media swapped with Wellbeing
Science swapped with Music.
In Reading, students have begun to study the author Stephen Michael King. They are learning about his life, the sources of his ideas, and beginning to ask themselves questions as they read. In Week One, they explored his website to learn more facts and information about the author, and in Week Two they have been guided through his famous first book 'The Man Who Loved Boxes'.
In Writing, our students have been recording interesting facts about Stephen Michael King. They have worked on retelling a story through words and then through writing. Students have been very engaged in the relatable texts that Stephen Michael King writes such as Henry and Amy and The Man Who Loved Boxes. Through exploring these stories we have touched on themes such as love, connection and kindness. We have dived deeper into the parts of speech such as nouns, and supported our retells with illustrations.
In Mathematics, it's all about the money! Students have learned to identify Australian coins and currency, how to combine coins to reach an amount, and touched on addition and subtraction. They have considered the real-world applications of this through worded questions. students have been provided with a range of hands on experiences and tasks.
Through Inquiry, students have begun to investigate the Central Idea of "Properties of materials determine their uses", and reflect upon why we choose the materials we do. Students have been exploring different types of materials in the classroom to determine what they are used for- discussing where we might find these and how certain materials might help us in real-life situations. Students have started to make connections between these materials and objects in the classroom that are made of the same properties.
