Geography fieldwork at Brighton beach
by Ms Sharyn Leahy Hatton, Humanities Domain Leader

This term, Year 8 students from 8A-8E ventured out to Brighton beach for their geography fieldwork to investigate coastal erosion in Port Phillip Bay (Nairm).
Students measured the direction of wind and waves and could see the impact from the movement of sand. Large groynes have been constructed to prevent the movement of sand.
This beach is a popular tourist destination due to the historic beach boxes, so students gained an understanding of the amount of management that occurs at this beach to maintain the area and prevent erosion.
This fieldwork is an enjoyable day out with much to explore.
