Model United Nations event at CHES

On Tuesday 17 March, students from Box Hill High School participated in the Model United Nations event which took place at the Centre for Higher Education Studies. The topic of the event was ‘Sustainable Cities and Communities: Towards a Resilient Future’.
This event simulated the way the UN General Assembly operates. Students became delegates representing their countries in the assembly. The delegates prepared and delivered position statements, participated in moderated and unmoderated caucus sessions, proposed amendment to the draft resolution and participated in a final resolution vote.
Students represented the following countries at the event:
India: Mingtong X 9A, Leana A 9D, Alissia G 9E
Kenya: Dhimahi S 9D, Kelly L 9D, Aashi K 9F, Tarragon M 10E
Germany: Abhinav B 9H, Harkunwar B 9H, Mohammad Z 9H
Abhinav:
The Model UN was an incredible exercise in strategic communication and global policy. As the Research Lead for Germany, the highlight for me was drafting technical amendments to the UN Resolution and defending them against major powers like China. I learned that diplomacy is as much about preparedness and data as it is about public speaking. Working with my team to coordinate our address was a great lesson in collaborative leadership, and I would definitely participate again to further refine my negotiation tactics.
Dhimahi:
I really enjoyed the Model UN experience. I really liked learning about how all the nations actually come together as one to form agreements and I really liked the caucus, both the moderated and unmoderated parts. I appreciated working with my group and talking to other schools. I would absolutely recommend this to my friends and do it again next year!
