Hands on Learning

Ashley Roberts

Hands on Learning is a practical, school-based program designed to build student wellbeing, engagement and attendance. Through meaningful, hands-on projects within the school and wider community, students have the opportunity to discover their strengths and talents while experiencing genuine success.

At the heart of the HOL program are our four pillars:

  • A place to belong

  • People to belong to

  • Real things to do

  • A chance to give back

At the HOL Shed, we are committed to creating a safe and supportive environment where every student feels valued, connected and capable.

Welcome Back to HOL 2026!

Students have returned to HOL with fantastic enthusiasm, launching into the year with a highly productive three-day program that achieved an incredible amount in a short time. They rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work, digging and installing a bath to form the foundation of an exciting new pond project. The team also revitalised the yard after a long summer break, clearing rampant weeds and breathing new life into the space. Inside the shed, students gave the area a fresh coat of paint, with plans to clad the exterior in timber in the coming weeks. The teamwork, energy and pride shown in their work has set a positive and inspiring tone for the year ahead.

Welcome Back Mike

We’re delighted to Mike Rhodes return to HOL in 2026. Having originally established the program at Lilydale Heights College, Mike’s return brings valuable experience, passion and leadership to the team.    As the program continues, students are focusing on their individual goals, supported closely by Mike, Ash and Erin. With strong relationships and authentic, hands-on projects at its core, HOL will continue to help students build skills, confidence and a strong sense of achievement throughout 2026.

Get to Know the Teacher

We’d love for students and families to get to know the people behind the Hands On Learning Program. In each newsletter, we’ll introduce a team member and share a little about who they are and how they support our students.

Meet Mike Rhodes

My name is Mike Rhodes and I am the Hands On Learning Co-ordinator at Lilydale Heights College.    I have been working in HOL for almost six years and I am extremely passionate about the program. I enjoy seeing the positive outcomes for the students who are involved and watching them grow in confidence and capability.   In my spare time, I like to ride motorcycles, I am mad about cars and I enjoy family holidays and caravan trips.

Having worked in carpentry and as an electrician, I am grateful to be able to share my knowledge and skills in trade while supporting students to find their strengths, build their sense of self and strengthen their connection to others.
