Health, Physical Education and Outdoor Education

Carly Clark

The Health, Physical Education and Outdoor Education faculty has enjoyed a fantastic start to the year. Students have been actively engaged in their Units Of Learning, building skills, confidence and a lifelong connection to health and physical activity and health. We are proud of the positive energy students have demonstrated in both practical and theoretical settings.

Year 7 Health and Physical Education

The Year 7 students have made a wonderful start to their Health and Physical Education journey at Lilydale Heights College. In Health, students are exploring the "Managing Change" Unit of Learning. This unit focuses on exploring the various changes that people go through as they transition from childhood to adolescence, as well as strategies to manage these changes.    In Physical Education, students are engaged in the "Move to Improve" Unit of Learning. This unit aims to refine key fundamental motor skills such as throwing, striking and kicking using correct technique. Students are learning how these skills transfer across a variety of sports and physical activities.   Students have completed their pre-assessment tasks, identifying their current skill levels and have established their next steps with their Learning Pathway progression.

Year 10 Outdoor Education – Mountain Biking

Our Year 10 Outdoor Education students have commenced their mountain biking sessions. The initial sessions focused on developing essential knowledge and safety awareness, including understanding the key components of a bike, correct equipment use and safe riding practices. Students also practised their fundamental bike skills, such as balance and control. The group have shown great enthusiasm and are excited to continue developing their biking skills. The group were among the first students to use our brand-new mountain bikes as part of their learning. Students will continue to develop skills, including learning about group riding, road safety and continuing to develop their mountain biking skills.

Year 8 Health and Physical Education - Bike Ed.

As a part of the Year 8 PE  "Active For Life" Unit of Learning, students will participate in a four-session bike education mini-unit. This program is designed to promote lifelong physical activity while developing practical riding skills, safety awareness and independence.   Throughout the unit, students will progressively build their knowledge and confidence through:

  • Session 1:  Introduction & Bike Safety (on school grounds)

  • Session 2:  Road Rules & Awareness (on school grounds)

  • Session 3: Risk & Hazard Management (school grounds, Gateway Reserve & Old Pound Reserve)

  • Session 4:  Big Ride (outside school grounds – TBC)

This learning sequence aims to develop students' knowledge and skills in relation to riding a bike and ultimately develop confidence and independence.   Many Lilydale Heights College staff members have recently completed Bike Education accreditation. This ensures the Bike Education program can continue to grow and remain embedded in our curriculum.
