Rehearsals for Matilda The Musical are well under way and we are looking forward to Production Camp at the end of March.
Daniel van Bergen
Leader of Performing Arts
In the middle of January, I went to the Melbourne Youth Orchestra Summer School with hundreds of other music students from all across Victoria. I had to travel to the city every day from Monday to Friday to the Conservatorium of Music at Southbank.
I spent six hours each day playing the clarinet with one of the Symphonic Bands. Every day we had sectional tutorials and ensemble rehearsals and a lot of fun.

The band I was in was conducted by Erin Ellenburg and we learned six amazing songs over the week: Big Little Fugue In G Minor; Music For A Darkened Theatre; Los Banditos; Gently Blows The Summer Wind; and Coming For To Carry Me Home. All of these songs were challenging: for example, one had three flats in the key; another had a confusing time signature; and yet another had whole phrases of semiquavers in Allegro.
All this practise culminated in a concert on Saturday afternoon at The Melbourne Recital Centre. All in all, I gained valuable knowledge and had an amazing time. I would highly recommend this experience for students in the music program from year 7 to year 12.
I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Newstead (my amazing clarinet teacher) for encouraging me to take part; my parents for spending the money for me to go and for helping me get there; and my MYOSS symphonic band conductor, Erin Ellenburg for being kind and teaching me new techniques and skills. ~ Sebastian West, Year 9
