Year 2 News

From Risa Hammel, Year 2E teacher
Another two weeks of learning have flown by for our Year Twos! We are settling into the winter months and staying safe and sensible with all the rain we have been getting.
English
Our Year Twos have begun a deep dive exploration into the fairytale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We began by reading the classic telling of the story. Using that story, the Year Twos practised their comprehension skills, including visualising, inferencing, and questioning. We also spent some time delving into the main characters and looking at their inside traits and outside traits.
The students also used Goldilocks and the Three Bears to develop and master some of their writing skills. We investigated and practised writing summaries of the story, focusing on sequencing events and retelling them. They also got a chance to practise their narrative writing through taking the characters of the story and recreating their own plot.
Maths
Our focus for maths has been measurement. This has included looking at practical skills, such as using a ruler to measure the length of different objects. We also used digital scales to heft, measure, and order different objects from the lightest to the heaviest mass. An activity to do at home for hefting includes holding one object in each hand and seeing if you can tell which one is heavier or lighter. You can then use any digital scale to check whether you were correct or not! This measurement unit also looked at using different units in the metric system, including centimetres and metres for length, millilitres and litres for capacity, and grams and kilograms for mass.
The Year Twos continue to focus on fluency in both reading and maths. This includes playing lots of different maths games and making sure we are continually practising our addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. We thank every family that is continuing to practise these fluency facts at home and encourage everyone to keep this up! For reading fluency in class, we have been using Epic, Kidsnews, and Nessy to practise oral reading fluency.
Thank you to all of our Year Two families for their continued support! We look forward to more learning to come!
