Year 3 News

From Ahmed Al- Hameli, Year 3B teacher
Busy and exciting fortnight of learning across Reading, Writing and Mathematics.
Reading
We have been exploring mentor texts to discover what makes great stories. Students have examined how authors create engaging characters, build suspense, craft exciting openings and develop satisfying endings. Through class discussions and close reading activities, students have identified the techniques authors use to hook readers and keep them engaged throughout a story. We have particularly focused on how strong introductions, interesting characters and moments of surprise or suspense can make a story memorable and enjoyable to read.
Writing
Students have begun creating their own narratives. They have spent time planning their stories by developing interesting characters, identifying character motivations, creating obstacles and solutions, and carefully mapping out their plots. Students have also been learning how to write strong story openings, use descriptive language, and organise their writing into paragraphs. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and imagination students have brought to their stories as they work towards publishing their final pieces.
Students have also been working hard to complete their Geography travel brochures. They have used their research about Australia’s neighbouring countries to create informative and persuasive brochures featuring landmarks, culture, food, visitor information and fun facts. We have been very impressed by the care students have taken with their layouts, illustrations and writing as they work towards producing a polished final product.
Maths
Students have been learning all about fractions. They have explored how wholes can be divided into equal parts and have investigated halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths. Students have represented fractions using shapes, area models and number lines, compared the size of different fractions, and solved problems involving fractions of collections. Through hands-on activities and mathematical discussions, students have developed a deeper understanding of how fractions represent parts of a whole and how they can be used in everyday situations.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, persistence and enthusiasm our Year 3 students continue to demonstrate in their learning. We look forward to sharing more of their achievements as the term progresses.
