Performing Arts News

From Dan Dinnen, Patrick Connor and Sam Howard, Performing Arts teachers
Over the past couple of weeks, NMPS have recognised Reconciliation Week, National Sorry Day and Mabo Day. In Performing Arts, we took the opportunity to sing our favourite songs from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and at ESC Grade 3 and 4s also started learning Joe Gaia’s 1988 song Lil Yull.
Speaking of all things Indigenous Australian, coming up at MSC on Weds 17th June, we have the Djirri Djirri Dance and Culture incursion for our Year1s and 2s. The incursion at ESC last month was fantastic, and we’re really excited for our Grade 1 and 2 students to have this opportunity soon.
Back at ESC, our Year 5 and 6 students have been using alternative theatre forms to explore theme-based drama. Students were introduced to the Playback Theatre form called “Fluid Sculptures” – participants interpret a response to a theme-based word or idea, repeating sounds, words and movements. We then used instruments created live musical scores to accompany the actors. Some of the results created moments of drama that really too Grade 5s and 6s to a new level!
As we approach the end of Term 2, it’s great to reflect on all the great work we have done across all year levels in Dance, Drama and Music. It’s been an awesome Semester One!
