Writing
Over the past week in Writing, the Year 6 students have completed their country postcards. Using the C-SPACE structure, they wrote from the point of view of a character (such as an exchange student), imagining what it would be like to visit their chosen country and write home about their experiences. Students included information about famous landmarks, foods, celebrations, geography, and other interesting features they discovered during their research.
Once the writing was complete, students used Canva to design the front of their postcards. They explored different layouts, colours, fonts, and images to create eye-catching designs that reflected the country they had researched. It was exciting to combine our writing skills with digital design skills to create realistic and engaging postcards.
Maths
Continuing on with our unit on Measurement, students have learnt about temperature, volume, mass and capacity. They enjoyed learning the different formulas for finding the area and volume of different types of shapes like prisms, triangles and cylinders.
Students also learnt some new measurement vocabulary such as 'cross section' which is the shape we get when cutting straight through an object, as well as 'apothem' which is the distance from the centre of a regular polygon to the midpoint of a side where it forms a right angle. It definitely helped to understand this vocab before finding the volume of prisms! Overall it was useful putting measurement in to real life contexts and especially fun when we got to help our prep buddies with informal measurement for the first time!
For the next couple of weeks, we are excited to be starting our next unit on... fractions!

Last week we went to Molesworth campus to visit our buddies! This time they were the hosts. Firstly, we got to know what our buddies did over the weekend and then after we went outside and did a measure of random objects using the informal units like feet or hands. We measured stuff like bark, sticks and poles. This was our buddies very first lesson on measurement! After that we had free play which we did stuff like tag, hide n seek and climbing on the playgrounds. Then we had to say goodbye to them and head back to Errol street campus. Next time we see our buddies we will be planning the activity and then we will see them again in Term 3!
