From the Year 1 Classroom

Hello Grade One families! It is crazy to think that we are halfway through the term! What a beautiful morning we had 2 weeks ago celebrating our amazing grandparents and special people. We have also been loving our AUSLAN lessons on Tuesdays. Our clever cookies are already starting to recite some of the alphabet in AUSLAN!
Reminders- Across the whole school we are having a focus on improving our morning routine. All students are expected to walk in, put their bags away, do their jobs and then head out to play, without reentering the buildings until the bell. If you could please reinforce this in the mornings also, we would be very appreciative.
Readers- Please remember to continue to bring in home readers on a Friday.
📝Literacy-
In the coming fortnight, we will continue to work on writing components of a short narrative. We know narratives have a beginning, middle and an end! We have also been working on extending our writing by using adjectives, exclamation marks to show excitement and ... (an ellipsis) to show suspense!
⭐Digraphs & Trigraphs we are learning:
Suffix ‘ed’ – this changes the word to make it past tense eg. jump - jumped
Suffix ‘s’ – this can change the word to make it plural eg. cat- cats
ow- /ow/ as in cow
ou- /ou/ as in cloud
We will also continue to review our split digraphs!
⭐ Tricky Words we are learning:
saw | school | again | who | any | over | mother | father |
friend | your | home | many | love | says | brother | sister |
baby | work | children | family | cousin | two
| three | four |
why | before | house | these | after | I'm | fast | last |

*Please help your child read and spell these words frequently at home!
➕➖Maths-
We have been having lots of fun in our maths lessons! We have continued to explore doubles facts and near doubles. We can use ‘near doubles’ as an addition strategy!
1 and 1 is double 1 and double 1 is 2.
2 and 2 is double 2 and double 2 is 4.
3 and 3 is double 3 and double 3 is 6.
4 and 4 is double 4 and double 4 is 8.
5 and 5 is double and double 5 is 10.
10 and 10 is double 10 and double 10 is 20.
We have also begun to apply our knowledge of patterns to number counting patterns. We have been practising skip counting by 2, 5 and 10 from any given starting point. We are working on identifying how many items are in a group by rearranging a collection into groups of 2s, 5s or 10s. We know we can skip count to find the total number of items in a collection.
We would love the children to continue practising this whenever they can at home! 😊 We had some fun applying our skip counting skills to counting collections of macaroni!
💙Religion – Daily Life in Jesus’ Time-
We have been learning about what Jesus’ life was like. We played marbles last week and explored other games Jesus would have played!
🌍 Inquiry- All About Weather-
We have been busy learning about different types of clouds, weather systems and how clouds make rain! Please remember to bring in a jar for our experiment! 😊
📆 Important dates-
Friday 28th August- BOOK WEEK PARADE!
Tuesday 1st & Wednesday 2nd September- Learning Conversations
Friday 4th September- Father's Day Liturgy
Take care and kind regards,
Kristy, Sarah, Kayte, Nikki, Kellie & Lily 😊
