From the Year 5 Classroom
It has been a wonderful time in our school community, with students enjoying opportunities to connect, learn, and celebrate together. We were delighted to welcome so many grandparents to our recent liturgy. Their presence made the celebration especially meaningful, and it was heartwarming to see families sharing in this important faith experience. Following the liturgy, grandparents enjoyed visiting classrooms and exploring the learning spaces with our Year 5 students, who proudly showcased their work and shared their learning experiences. We also congratulate all students who participated in the recent Lightning Premiership. The event was a fantastic display of teamwork, determination, and school spirit. Students represented our school with pride, demonstrating excellent sportsmanship and encouraging one another throughout the day. We are incredibly proud of their efforts and thank all staff and families who supported the event. Well done to everyone involved!
Literature
This week, our Year 5 students are finishing Tom Appleby, Convict Boy by Jackie French. Throughout the novel, students have explored life in early colonial Australia, gaining valuable insights into the experiences of convicts and the challenges they faced. To support their understanding of the text, students have also been busy researching and writing an information report, developing their reading comprehension, research, and writing skills while making connections to the historical context of the story. Beginning next week, students will embark on a new reading adventure with The Grandest Bookshop in the World by Amelia Mellor, which we will enjoy for the remainder of the term. Inspired by Melbourne’s famous Cole’s Book Arcade, this imaginative and richly detailed novel combines history, mystery, and adventure. We look forward to exploring this wonderful story together and using it to spark thoughtful discussions, inspire creative thinking, and foster a lifelong love of reading.
Reading Diaries
Year 5 students are encouraged to read at home for a minimum of 80 minutes per week. This is to be recorded in their school diary. Diaries are used at school throughout the week, so we ask that rather than taking diaries home, children recorded their reading each morning as part of their daily set up. Diaries will be checked by class teachers each Friday.
Specialist Classes
Year 5 students will continue to participate in Specialist lessons on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. This semester, students have been learning Auslan, during their Tuesday and Wednesday Specialist sessions. It has been wonderful to see them building their communication skills, developing an understanding of inclusive communication.
Students may wear their PE uniform on Thursdays and Fridays.
Learning Support Officer
Our Year 5 Learning Support Officer is Katrina Carpenter who will be working with us from Monday to Thursday.
