From the Year 3 Classroom
We can’t believe we are halfway through the term already!
Reading-
Students continue enjoy our novel- The Iron Man, which is building up to a climax with another twist! The world is facing a threat from the space-bat-angel-dragon flying creature! The townspeople start to see how Iron Man could be useful as danger looms!
Through their reading, students are developing their comprehension skills by using their knowledge of text structures and language features and by monitoring their understanding of the text. They are asking and answering questions to clarify meaning and deepen their understanding, while also identifying and describing how literary devices help shape meaning in the story. Students are expanding their vocabulary by learning and applying new words encountered throughout the novel, enriching both their reading and writing skills.
Don’t forget our annual Book Week parade will be on Friday August 28th. Get those costumes out ready to celebrate!
Writing
Students continue to work on their Information Report on their Natural Disaster by converting their note taking into paragraphs. Paragraph structure has been a new skill taught, with each paragraph outlining a topic sentence, three supporting detail sentences and a concluding sentence. This week the students will publish their finals pieces. We can't wait to see their finished pieces of writing!
Spelling
This week we will learn different ways to spell the phonemes:
/ar/ as in dark and fast
/or/ as in more, draw, sport, haul
/ir/ as in stir, serve, burn
We continue to revise Cross, Pop and Slide strategy helping students clearly see how contractions are formed and makes the process both engaging and easy to remember. We also have been practising using the correct ‘there/they’re/their’ in the correct context.
Maths
In Mathematics, students have been learning about analogue time and reading times quarter to/past, as well as to each minute. This week we look at converting analogue to digital times. Try and encourage your child to read an analogue clock or watch at home to help with this important life skill!
Reminder: Please continue practising your times tables at home. Regular practice helps build confidence, improve recall speed, and supports learning across many areas of Mathematics. Even a few minutes of practice each day can make a big difference! 📚➕✖️
RE
Unit: Known, Loved and Called: Choosing the Way of Jesus
In Religion, students will explore their identity as people who are created, known and loved by God, and consider how this understanding shapes the way they live each day. Through Scripture and the example of Jesus, students will learn that Christian identity is grounded in God's love and call, rather than popularity, success or mistakes. They will explore how followers of Jesus are invited to make thoughtful and loving choices in everyday situations, particularly in friendships, school life and their wider community. Students will also consider how Christians listen to Jesus, reflect on what is loving and right, and think about how their actions impact others. Through these learning experiences, students will develop a deeper understanding of how faith can guide their decisions and relationships.
On Friday morning we head to the MPB for the Feast of the Assumption Mass. The Feast of the Assumption is all about how God allowed Mary to go up to heaven in her body and soul, to be with Jesus again.

The Mystery of Australian History
This week ahead we look at reasons for world exploration in history, investigate world famous explorers and their conquests. We delve deeper into the arrival of European settlers in Australia, in particular, the First Fleet and the impacts of First Contact.
