Year 1/2's

It was fantastic to see everyone in their house colours on Friday at Cross Country. Well done to everyone, what a terrific effort!!
Reading
Students have been learning about British explorers who helped pave the way for the future of Australia. We covered how they travelled across the land, connected different places, and sometimes learned from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples about the land and how to survive. In the final weeks of term, we will move on to learning about the early settlers of Australia.
Writing
In Writing, students have been working on sentence construction by identifying and using nouns and verbs. They have also been learning to use conjunctions such as because, but, and so to join ideas. Students have been practising expanding their sentences by answering questions such as who, what, when, where, and why.
Phonics
Phonics groups have continued to focus on sounds, high-frequency words, morphology, dictation, and reading fluency. Students across all groups are experiencing great success in their streamed phonics sessions across the 1/2 classes.
Maths
In Maths, students have been learning a range of strategies for addition and subtraction. This has included making number bonds and using bar models to help represent and solve problems.
Wellbeing
Our Year 2 students participated in a Kids Helpline incursion where they learned about resilience. They explored the power of the word “yet” and discussed positive self-talk strategies to help become their own cheerleaders when learning new or challenging things. All students have been learning about respect and working through the keys of communication when resolving conflicts.
Auslan
Students have been learning how to sign phrases and questions such as “How are you?”, “What’s your name?”, and “What is your favourite colour?”, as well as respond.
PBL / PMP and ICT
Year 2 students have been working on Typing Club, focusing on building their typing speed and accuracy and then transferring these skills to typing documents onto Google Docs. They have also been learning about the difference between hardware and software and identifying examples they use at home and school.
Year 1 students have been alternating between PMP and PBL sessions.
During PMP, our Year 5 students helpers have been leading gross motor activities and teaching some classic outdoor games with rules, which we have been enjoying on sunny Friday afternoons.
During PBL, Lego construction has been a big hit, along with building and creating with the wooden planks.
