From the Year 3 Classroom

Reading
This week we completed our entertaining text Off we go around Australia. The students really enjoyed the different text illustrations and learning about interesting tourist places in Australia sharing their own adventures and connections with the text. We had a great lesson plotting all the places the family had travelled on a map using Google Maps.
This fortnight’s spelling focus has been around the various ways to spell long vowel sounds of /a/ (eight, play, break, sail, plate,) and /e/ (ee, ie, ea, ey) . We have also looked at homophones- words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings.
Tricky words we have learnt include- February, they, always, favourite, beginning, forgetting, Ask your child what are the tricky parts to these words and encourage to spell at home.
Congratulations to all students who have continued to consistently bring in their weekly reading log in their diaries each week. Your dedication is commendable- keep it up!
Writing
This week, Year 3 students completed their Explanatory Writing piece on “How waterfalls are formed.” Students worked diligently to ensure their writing followed the correct explanatory structure, including an introduction, sequenced paragraphs and a clear conclusion. There was a strong focus on using Tier 3 vocabulary as well as explaining each step of the process in logical order.
Maths
In Maths, students have been learning about arrays and how they support understanding of multiplication and division fact families. Through hands‑on activities and visual representations, students explored how numbers can be grouped and shared, helping them make strong connections between multiplication and division. There has also been a focus on developing quicker recall of the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables. Next term, we will begin our Timestables Challenge, encouraging students to build confidence, accuracy and fluency with their multiplication facts.
RE
This week we have finished learning about the season of Lent and its importance in the Catholic Church. Through prayer, discussion and creative activities, students explored how Lent is a time to reflect, pray, give and prepare our hearts for Easter. Thank you to Mrs McInness for joining us for Godly Play this week for the story ‘Jesus has Risen’.
Inquiry
We completed our Inquiry unit with Physical Health (week 9) and ways to stay active and Hygiene health (week 10). We investigated where in our home the most germs were and ways to keep safe from germs!
